Greetings Faith, and Merry Christmas!

Thursday, December 28, 2017

How many of you have already put away your Christmas tree and decorations? How many of you, like me, have been so busy since Christmas Day that you haven't even thought about the arduous task of putting away all the Christmas decorations (that it feels like you JUST put up two weeks ago)? And now that we’re done with the stress of planning for Christmas Day, we have to get ready for New Year’s - and make resolutions, right?

Have you given any thought to what you would like to start, or habits you want to change, or even habits you want to end in 2018? I haven't thought about what I am doing for New Year's Eve, much less resolutions for the New Year. The only thing I'm going to be thinking about on New Year's Day is sleep and watching my Clemson Tigers beat Alabama and my Georgia Bulldogs beat that team from north of the Red River.

This will be my 31st time witnessing the calendar flip from one year to the next, and I have noticed that New Year's resolutions never really change. People always make promises that they will eat better, exercise more, or try this or that self-help program – and are usually only successful for a month, maybe a month and a half. As I write this, I wonder ‘what happened to the joy at Christmas?’ I mean, we spent what seemed like a hundred hours prepping, and who knows how much money on gifts for Christmas, only to open gifts, clean up the mess, and then take a nap and move on to the next thing.

But this year, what if we look at our resolutions differently? Can we be intentional about carrying the joy and meaning of Christmas into 2018? My 2018 New Year's resolution is to continue to share the joy of Jesus' birth at Christmas, and make 2018 a year of change for the better - not for me, but for my community, and the world. I’d really like to make 2018 a year that I can look back on at this time next year, and say, "Wow! That was great! Cheers to 2018!” Are you with me?
