November 16, 2017: Staying Focused

Thursday, November 16, 2017

Yesterday I had the opportunity to go on a field trip to the Perot Museum — not as a student, but as a parent. It was a fast-paced day. The kids raced from station to station, exhibit to exhibit. I noticed that they might be completing the task at each station or exhibit, but they weren’t really reading or understanding what the task was supposed to demonstrate. They were rushing to complete the task at hand so they could move on to "the next thing," but they weren’t gleaning any knowledge or experience about how the world works. I spent much of my time trying to keep them together but also trying to help them slow down a bit so I could ask the question, "What does this mean?" or "What can we learn from this?"

But it isn’t just children that need help staying focused and need a reminder to slow down so we might learn from the things we do each day. I need help too. Life is fast and it’s filled with dozens of distractions calling for my attention every day.

Practicing gratitude this month and keeping a gratitude journal have helped me slow down and reflect on the tasks of the day. I am taking time to focus on where is God in everyday moments, and ask myself what am I learning, and how is this a blessing.

In our Extravagant Generosity series, I have asked you to reflect on several questions:

  1. What do you love about your church?
  2. Who in this church do you love for the impact they’ve had on your personal faith journey?
  3. What are your dreams for your church – what do you want to see happen now?

The question now is “What are you willing to invest?”

What – out of God’s extravagant generosity to you – are you willing to return as an investment in Him and building His kingdom here on earth?

I look forward to seeing you in worship on Sunday, as we give thanks for all that God has given to us and celebrate the EXTRAVAGANT Generosity of God and God’s creation.
