Give thanks in every situation because this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.
(1 Thes. 5:18 CEB)
As part of my personal spiritual practice this November, I am keeping a gratitude journal again. I chose to do this on Facebook this year. Each day I am intentionally looking for things to be thankful for: people, things, situations, opportunities and even challenges.
I’ve learned that blessings in life aren’t always fun, easy or enjoyable in the moment. But if we look closely, we can and will find God – even in those difficult moments – and will see things to be grateful for. For example, as I read back over my gratitude journal in 2014, I wrote this prayer: “God help me to remember and give thanks for these 3 and 4 a.m. feedings with Righteous. I am tired and I just want to go back to sleep, I long for a full night’s sleep. God, help me to be grateful, help me to see the gift in the moment and know these are few in number.” Our children grow up fast, the days fly by and today, I am lucky if I can get RY to let me hold him or sit with me for more than a minute at a time.
~ What can you give thanks for in the moment? ~
It is not too late to start a gratitude journal this year. Last Sunday, if you listed someone from our church who has had an impact on your spiritual life, take a moment and send them a note or email and let them know you are thankful for them.
I look forward to another week of our Extravagant Generosity series and hearing more of your stories.
P.S. Don’t forget that this Sunday, November 12, 2017, at 9:00 a.m. you can join the 2nd Sunday Sermon Discussion around Extravagant Generosity (Room 137).
